| SCHOOL HOURS… BE PUNCTUAL
! |
 |
• Pre-School (Early Years
and Reception) :
School starts promptly at 9:00 and lessons finish at 15.15.
In Early Years 1, children attending for mornings only finish at 11.45.
On Wednesday school finishes at 11.45.
• Key Stage 1 (Grade 1 and Grade 2) :
School starts promptly at 9:00 and lessons finish at 15.20.
On Wednesday school finishes at 11.50.
• Key Stage 2 (Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5 and Grade 6) :
School starts promptly at 9:00 and lessons finish at 15.30.
On Wednesday school finishes at 12.00.
• Key Stage
3 (Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9) :
School starts promptly at 9:00 and lessons finish at 15.40.
. Key Stage 4 (Grade 10):
School starts promptly at 9.00 and lessons finish at 15.40 (3.40pm)
In the morning parents may bring their children into school. This can be
a good opportunity to give your child’s class teacher information,
which is important for that day. It is very important for parents to make
sure that their children arrive on time for school so that the class teacher
can start promptly at 9.00.
Children arriving late miss valuable explanations and also disrupt the rest
of the class.
At the end of the school day parents should wait outside the school gate
for the children to be dismissed.
There are no arrangements for care of children arriving before 8.30. Similarly,
pupils should be collected from school within 10 minutes of the end of the
school day ie by 15.40, or if they have attended an extra-curricular club,
by 16.40 unless a prior alternative arrangement has been made, or by 18.00
if they have attended the afternoon homework help (garderie).
Children will not be released into the care of anyone other than a parent
or nanny known to the school unless prior written notification has been
received. Anyone unknown to the school will be asked to prove their identity.
Please note that once dismissed, parents must take responsibility for their
own children even though they are still on the school premises.
ENTRANCE TO AND EXIT FROM SCHOOL
For security reasons parents are asked to always close the gate and close
doors as they come and go. At 9:15 the school gate is locked and is not
reopened until 15:15. Between those times, if parents need to visit the
school, they should ring on the bell at the entrance. TOILET
TRAINING
Pre-School children must be completely toilet trained before starting
school. SUGGESTIONS FOR PRE-SCHOOL PURCHASE
In Pre-School we try to encourage the children to become as independent
as possible and therefore the following hints may be useful when you are
buying clothes and items for school : • Velcro fastening shoes
are much easier than lace-ups for small children. • Elasticised
waists are easier to manage than buttons and belts when they start to use
the toilet. • Lunch boxes should be able to be opened by the
children themselves as much as possible. • All children need
to have a change of clothes at school and everything should be labelled.
SCHOOL BAGS
Children should have a small bag or backpack which they take to and from
school. Parents should check this each evening for newsletters and other
communication from school. MORNING PLAY
TIME
All the children have a playtime in the middle of the morning. The older
children have a shorter break than the younger children.
All the children are allowed to bring a small snack to have during this
playtime but children may not bring glass bottles to school. Also, chewing-gum
is not allowed in school. PRE-SCHOOL AFTERNOON
QUIET TIME
There are small beds provided for those who need a sleep in the afternoon.
LUNCH TIME
Children eat the school hot lunch or bring a packed lunch from home.
They eat in the lunch room with their teachers.
LABELS FOR CLOTHES AND OTHER ITEMS
Parents are asked to label all their children’s possessions.
LOST PROPERTY
All PE kits, jackets, coats, etc. should be clearly marked with the owner's
name. School bags, pencil-cases, lunch boxes, etc. should also be marked.
Any articles found around the school are quickly returned to the rightful
owner if named. Articles not named are put into the Lost Property Box. This
is a large box to be found in front of the turtles’saquarium. Children
who have lost something should look in the box. Parents are welcome to come
and retrieve missing articles. Please ensure that everything your child
brings to school is clearly named. TOYS
Children are not allowed to bring toys into school to play with (except
during Show and Tell day). The school cannot accept responsibility for toys
that are lost or damaged. |

assembly takes place every Friday afternoon. Parents will be invited to
a few assemblies during the school year. Assemblies are always enjoyable
occasions when the school comes together to see the work of the different
classes, to celebrate birthdays and other occasions and to learn about the
social rules of working and playing together.

| FRIDAY'S assembly |
|
|
| |
| |
| We
were all very pleased to hear Madeleine's story since we were acting. |
| |
We
read about our hopes on the ski trip. |
|
| In assembly Gaby and Bryce
read their excellent alternative ending as did George. They deserved
their round of applause. |
| |
|
|
We read an extract
from the play version of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.
We then invented our own sweets and characters for our own scenes
KS2 in the assembly : |
|
| Pre-School assembly: Jack, Marc
and Sam told us about something they had seen with their teacher:
not the “clowns” or the “crayons”, but
the cranes, back in Pau and telling us “Winter is definitely
over!” |
|
|
Pre-School
children danced on “The Wiggles”. |
|
| We presented our class poem. Each
child was a colour and each colour had a personality. Bryce
was White and he was hiding. Jaimy was Black and he was bullying... |
|
|
We performed
a play about a Celtic settlement attacked by the Romans. |

THE SCHOOL DRESS CODE
All students from Reception to Grade 6 come to school dressed
with the school uniform. Caps or hats must not be worn inside the
building and girls must not come to school with jewellery, nail varnish
or unnaturally coloured hair! All clothing, including jackets and
overcoats, should be named.
THE SCHOOL UNIFORM (uniform
is not compulsory for : Early Years children )
I.S.Béarn requires pupils to wear an uniform at school.
The uniform is appropriate and comfortable and gives children a sense
of belonging to and pride in the school community. Children wear the
following :
1. Bottle green jumper, sweat-shirt or cardigan with the school logo.
2. White shirt (polo or plain)
3. Dark grey trousers, bermuda shorts or skirts
4. White or grey socks or tights
5. Brown or black shoes (not sport shoes). |
|
|
|
| PE
CLOTHING (the whole school)
For their PE lessons and After-school sport activities :
1. Dark blue tracksuit,
2. White T-shirt.
3. Dark blue shorts, worn in warm weather.
4. Outside running sport shoes or inside thin gymnastic shoes
As far as possible children are expected to wear this clothing for
all physical education lessons.
With all the children wearing identical clothing it is essential
that all items are clearly marked with the child's name and class
as soon as possible. It is not recommended that children come to
school; in their PE kit, considering that time is allocated for
changing by the class teacher before each lesson.
PE kit is brought to school in Mondays and returned home in Fridays.

BEHAVIOUR
Children are expected to behave well in school. Good behaviour
is encouraged and praised. Parents are informed if there is a serious
problem with their child’s behaviour so that together we can help
the child overcome the difficulty.
CODE OF CONDUCT AND SCHOOL RULES
The aim of school is to create a social climate which is encouraging and
positive in response to the needs of young people.
STANDARDS OF CODEX
THE ISBEARN PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN SHOULD :
1. Come to school prepared to work to the best of their abilities.
2. Complete homework assignments and hand them in punctually.
3. Show respect for the teachers, other members of the school staff and
one another.
4. Show respect for school property, such as books and equipment and also
for the property of others. Other people's belongings must not be borrowed
without permission. They should not be hidden.
5. Be punctual – this a sign of respect.
6. Moving calmly in school at all times – running in the corridors
or on the stairs could be dangerous.
7. Walk in single file.
8. Always speak in English inside the building. French is only spoken
during French lessons.
THE ISBEARN PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN SHOULD NOT
:
1. Use bad language or play rough games.
2. Bring walkmans, radios, mobile phones, computer games, etc. to school.
3. Chew gum in school.
4. Be in the classroom at any time without supervision. Children who have
a request in the diary to stay indoors during break times must stay in
the entrance corridor by the door seats and carry out quiet activities.
The secretary, staff room and Director's rooms are located there.
Ball games should be played only outside the school building. All litter
must be placed in the bins.
Any damage to property must be reported immediately: anyone doing wilful
damage will be asked to pay for the necessary repairs or replacements.
DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES
Our children are generally well behaved. However, when a classroom, school
or playground rule is not followed or when class assignments are incomplete
or missing, children need to understand that some form of disciplinary
action will be taken and may consist of one or more of the following consequences
:
1. A teacher/adult will talk to the child about his/her incorrect behaviour.
2. The child's parent/guardian will be notified in the diary.
3. The child will be assigned to a work period during break time. This
is known as “detention”.
4. Misbehaviour in the playground will first result in “time-out”
by the wall/door in order to reflect upon behaviour.
5. A meeting will be held between teacher and parent.
6. If the child persists in breaking the rules he will be sent to the
Director. The Director will decide on the consequences on an individual
basis.
CLASS RULES
CHILDREN SHOULD :
1. Put their hand up to speak.
2. Work quietly.
3. Ask to go to the toilet.
4. Wait for the teacher to go up and down stairs.
5. Always do their own work.
6. Talk calmly, not shout out.
7. Listen to the teacher.
8. Listen to others.
9. Look after everything in the classroom.
LUNCHTIME RULES
CHILDREN SHOULD :
1. Clear their table at the beginning of their lunch.
2. Set their table.
3. Wait for the teacher.
4. Wash their hands.
5. Stay seated while eating.
6. Not talk with their mouth full.
7. Ask to leave the table when they have finished.
8. Clear their table at the end of their lunch.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
French law requires a medical certificate for a child to be re-admitted
to school after an absence of five days (including weekends).
The Director may refuse admission to children without such a certificate.
For absence less than five days a note should be written to the class
teacher even if parents have to phone school the first morning of absence.
Advance notice of any planned absence from school is required.

SCHOOL OUTING |
| |
|
Thursday
25th of September |
| |
|
| It was a fantastic
day ! We all went to the vineyard to collect grapes. We could
even taste them. They were quite sweet. Pierre, the wine maker,
said it was "petit manseng". But what we prefered
was "le bourrette", which is fermeted grape juice.
Yummy ! But no alcohol ! |
|
|
|
Thursday was an amazing trip to the vinyard.
We cut, picked and ate (!) grapes. We saw how wine was made and
to our teachers disappointment drank grape juice. It'a amazing to
think that like all plants the vines make their own food out of
light and carbon dioxide! |

| |
 |
|
| |
|
There are many ways in which parents and teachers
can keep in touch with each other.
Informal chats
Usually this is all that is needed at the start or the end of the school
day to provide useful opportunities for interaction.
Personal appointments
Should you need to make an appointment to see a teacher to discuss your
child’s progress or any other matter then speak to the secretary
or directly with the teacher concerned.
Although we are flexible with appointment times please remember that teachers
are at their busiest at the beginning and end of each day.
Weekly news
A weekly newsletter is distributed to parents, via the children every
Monday. It gives brief details of the past week and the coming week’s
events. Please note that we expect parents to read the weekly news –
it is a formal channel of communication and may give important information
that needs your attention.
Parent's meetings
Meetings with parents are held twice a year.
The first is held in September or early October to familiarise parents
with programmes and expectations for the year and to allow them to meet
teachers and each other. At the beginning of this meeting specialist teachers
give a brief resume of their programmes after which the class teachers
see their own parents to explain the syllabus, methods of teaching and
anything specific to their class.
The second is held in February in the form of individual interviews giving
parents a progress report of the year and to indicate targets for the
future.
Reports
Reports are a record of your child’s progress during a year. They
are issued once a year, in June, to children in Pre-School. Reports are
issued twice a year in Primary School, in February and June. If you are
concerned about any comments in the report please make an appointment
to see the teacher concerned.
Diaries
Each child in Primary School is issued with a school diary. This diary
is an important means of communication between the parents and the teachers.
It is used to give important messages from the class teacher concerning,
for example, homework, progress, absences, etc. Please feel free to use
your child's diary for communication with the teachers.
Diaries should not be used by the student to draw or scribble on.
Written communication in the diary MUST BE MADE if your child is to go
home with another parent or friend. A Fax or email can also be made. This
message MUST go to the school office.
N.B.: No child will be allowed to go with anyone UNLESS written notification
is made. |
